How Secure is Your Well?

April 08, 2015 // Posted by: The Well Optix Team

Data security is a real concern for consumers and industry alike. Data breaches at major retailers have exposed the risks of data theft. For oilfield operators, the other risk is loss of equipment control. In December news came out about a data breach at German steel mill. The illegal entry caused an unscheduled shutdown of a blast furnace, resulting in significant damage.

So the question is, how secure is your well?

Operators are now commonly making their well data available for remote access by pumpers, engineers and others for maintenance monitoring and production analysis. The data is available to mobile devices, enabling field personnel to identify potential problems without having to physically visit each well.  This is a great efficiency gain, and can be quite secure when proactive steps are taken.

Adding SCADA Remote Monitoring to Your Existing Infrastructure

February 16, 2015 // Posted by: The Well Optix Team

The advantages of remote monitoring are many, and operators are increasingly deploying drive systems complete with SCADA. But what about the pumping systems already in the field? There is a solution for that too.

If you have a drive system—any drive system—you can add remote monitoring simply and easily. Here’s what it takes:

  • MyBus conformance—SCADA remote monitoring can be connected to any system that conforms to MyBus.
  • Weatherproof communications box—this unit mounts near the system.
  • Private cellular network—the network is used to provide secure access to your data.

Digital Oil Conference in Tulsa, OK

January 28, 2015 // Posted by: The Well Optix Team

Well Optix will exhibit at this year’s Digital Oil Conference in Tulsa, OK. Kimberly Early, Well Optix Sales and Marketing Manager, will present at the conference on a topic that is considered to be a key issue in the digital oilfield - security. Make plans to hear and see the presentation of "How Secure is Your Well?". The two day event will be hosting its second year as a conference that focuses on how digital technologies have improved and changed the oilfield business on February 18-19, 2015.

SCADA has grown in importance within the oilfield over the last several years. More and more people are using it as a tool to remotely monitor their wells.  Being able to know the status of their wells 24/7 allows them to increase their uptime, saves them money on repairs, and can help increase their production by optimizing the performance of the well.

Digital Oilfield Trends

January 14, 2015 // Posted by: The Well Optix Team

While the concept of the digital oilfield is not new, several trends are converging that should accelerate technology adoption. These trends are:

  • Increasing production variability
  • Increasing recovery costs
  • Mobile technology adoption

Combined, these trends are pushing operators to move faster toward fully automating their fields and connecting them to the rest of the company through remote monitoring and control.

Trend #1: Increasing production variability

Unconventional resource plays have opened up great new opportunities for oil and gas companies. The potential volume of hydrocarbons now accessible in the US is staggering and there has been a rush to grab the opportunity.

SCADA Adds Value to Your Bottom Line

December 31, 2014 // Posted by: The Well Optix Team

We have all heard of the usefulness of SCADA to oilfield operations but what does it really contribute to your bottom line? Does it really add value to your operations and affect profit? The answer is a definite yes.

SCADA can contribute to both higher production and lower costs. Both of these improvements flow to the bottom line. In addition, SCADA improves the sustainability of your operations. In other words, you can count on your pump to keep pumping efficiently and maintenance to be more proactive than reactive. We all know that emergency maintenance takes longer and has a greater impact on production than scheduled maintenance.
